RESPECT is a social-emotional learning curriculum in bullying, sexual and racial harassment and violence prevention. It is evidence-based and systematically and scientifically arms students with the tools to re-shape their peer culture in the direction of greater safety. The program targets the 'universal risk factors' that are the psychological precursors to peer aggression. The goals of training are to reduce unwanted incidents by shifting the social norms of the school culture. There is no stronger deterrent to peer aggression than student-driven cultural change.
RESPECT is a developmental curriculum. There are separate editions available for Middle School, High School and College (add links to the pages for each), spanning the full range of adolescence. A professional development component is available for teachers and school administrators; and there is a workshop for parents.
RESPECT uses a turnkey model. We train guidance counselors, social workers, psychologists and other mental health faculty in the public schools, and similarly-trained professionals in the colleges to facilitate the intervention with the students. The program has an assessment component. We perform the data analysis of aggregate student scores and provide written feedback to the district or university at the end of the academic year that quantifies the 'risk factors' for that student population and benchmarks improvements in school culture over time.
(In Middle School Section)
RESPECT is administered in only 4 classroom sessions.
(In High School Section)
RESPECT is administered in only 5 classroom sessions.
(In College)
RESPECT is administered in only 2 sessions, each about 2 hours long. It has been used effectively in freshman orientation classes, dormitory settings and with special groups of identified 'at-risk' students.
